Where were the first wind farms in Hawaii developed? Hawaii Island.
With its large land area of 4,028 square miles, soaring mountain peaks and consistent trade winds, Hawaii Island has world-class wind farm locations in three primary regions:
• North Kohala, the northern end of the island
• South Point, the southern tip
• Saddle Area, the mid-section between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa
Over 30 MW of wind energy are now produced from two Hawaii Island wind farms.
The Hawaii County Department of Water Supply is seeking add a new wind energy generation system large enough to supply electricity to four existing water wells in the Lalamilo area, thus replacing the old Lalamilo wind farm.
